imagine this: you are playing outside with your favorite toy. suddenly you throw it and it finds its way inside a window. this window leads to the basement. you go open the door to the basement, turn on the single light bulb, and make your way slowly down the stairs. you move slowly because that light bulb doesn't fully illuminate the whole basement. you can barely make out the furniture and trinkets that lie in the darkness. and that feeling , of not knowing what lies beyond, stops your descend. you question if you should keep going. your instincts tell you this is not a safe place. fear creeps in.
you can see your toy, on the floor. is not far away. your instinct get overpowered by your desire and you continue down. you make sure not to touch anything else, its dusty and cover in spiderweb. you're at the bottom, about to pick your toy and suddenly...that feeling. something in the dark is watching me.
you grab your toy and start running! fear and panic propel you out. you run and every step of the way out, you can feel as if something is right behind you. right behind you , and getting closer. you can feel it near your neck. YOUR'E OUT! slam the door shut. trembling, you swear to never ever go down there ever again.

and that's my childhood terror. you know i don't normally don't do contest but the moment i read the description for it, an image pop in my head. so i was like "well why not". its very rare that i get an exact image of what i want in my head, but this one just solidified rather quickly. and im double impressed in that it basically came out just like i picture it in my head.
i would say that the fear image is the enviroment itself.
That story gave me goosebumps. The basement still scares me. People used to give us china dolls as holiday presents, and where do my parents keep them but the basement? Going downstairs to get something like wine or a box of old videotapes, I always make sure that the lights are all on and that nothing's moving before I go into the room xD
I like how it could also seem like the creature is hiding from the child, like the child is the scary one. I mean, how would I feel if my nice little world were suddenly invaded by a small thing that trembles its way down the stairs looking around with buggy eyes, twitching at every sound. I'd be scared as hell of it!
that happened to me once when i went into a friends basement (god knows for what reason). now the bad thing was that i did not know where the light switch was, all i had was the door's light so see. what really creep out , was that there was a slight shine of an eye at the distance. "dude there something here" i shouted to my friend. we later found out , when we found the light, that it was a bulls head (taxidermic).
so now you know the story why i put that bull in there. not that i don't like bull heads, but eyes in the dark. screw that! XD
that reminds me, when I was in the basement and the lights turned off. I couldīt see anything and untold this day I didnīt fear the basement. But in this moment I lost the orientation completely. It was like in a labyrinth and it was really terrifying not to see anything. It feels like being blind and helpless. I was so happy when the lights turned on again.
Nice one!

I like the symbolism. Good luck!!
